وَقَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى : حَدَّثَنَا كَامِلُ بْنُ طَلْحَةَ ، ثَنَا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ ، ثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ شُعَيْبٍ ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : إِنَّ رِجَالًا أَتَوْا رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالُوا : إِنَّا نَاسٌ نَكُونُ بِالرَّمْلِ فَتُصِيبُنَا الْجَنَابَةُ وَفِينَا الْحَائِضُ وَالنُّفَسَاءُ ، وَلَا نَجِدُ الْمَاءَ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ ؟ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " عَلَيْكُمْ بِالْأَرْضِ " .

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that some people came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "We are people who live in a sandy (desert) region, and we become junub (in need of ghusl), and among us are women in menstruation and postnatal bleeding, while we do not find water for four months at a time (so what should we do in such a situation)?" At this the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hold to the earth (that is, perform tayammum)."
