Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came and stood by some people who were sitting, and he said: "Shall I tell you about the best of you as opposed to the worst of you?" The people remained silent. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated his words three times, and then one of those present said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The best of you is the one from whom good is hoped and from whose evil (people feel) safe; and the worst of you is the one from whom no good is hoped and from whose evil (people do) not feel safe."
Ahmad recorded it with two chains; the narrators of one of them are the narrators of the Sahih.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I not tell you about the worst of you?" The people said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah, if you wish." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The worst of you are those who camp alone, flog their slaves and withhold their gifts." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Shall I not tell you about someone even worse than that?" The people said: "O Messenger of Allah, yes, if you wish." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The one who hates people and whom people hate." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I not tell you about someone even worse than that?" The people said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah, if you wish." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Those who do not overlook a slip, do not accept an excuse and do not forgive a sin." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I not tell you about someone even worse than that?" The people said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The one from whom no good is hoped and from whose evil (people do) not feel safe."
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Anbas bin Maymun, who is matruk (abandoned).
Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) transmits this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Shall I not tell you about the worst of you?" The people said: "Yes." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The worst of you are those whose evil people try to guard against and from whom no good is expected; and the best of you are those from whom good is hoped and whose evil there is no need to guard against."
Abu Ya'la recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Mubarak bin Suhaym, who is matruk (abandoned).
