Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man greeted the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with salam while he was praying, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied to him with a gesture. When he had concluded the prayer with the salam, he said: "Previously we used to return the greeting (during the prayer), then we were forbidden from that."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, Abdullah bin Salih, the scribe of al-Layth. He has been declared trustworthy, and a group has also declared him da'if (weak). The rest of its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
