Abu Thawr al-Huddani, who belonged to a branch of the Murad tribe, narrates: I came to Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him); both of them were in the mosque of Kufa in the days of al-Jara'ah (al-Jara'ah is the name of a place in Kufa where this incident took place). This was on the occasion when the people treated Sa'id bin al-As as they did. Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) was teaching the people and saying: By Allah! I do not think that this matter will end until blood is shed in it. Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah! This matter will end and no blood will be shed in it; and whatever I know about it today, I knew it even when Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was alive.

In one narration the words are: Abu Thawr al-Huddani narrates: I came to Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) in the mosque. Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) was saying: By Allah! I do not think that this matter will end until blood is shed in it. Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: But I know that this matter will end and there will be no killing and bloodshed in it. A man will be a believer in the morning and become a disbeliever in the evening, or be a believer in the evening and become a disbeliever in the morning; his heart will be turned upside down and his backside will rise above him. The one who fights today in the fitnah (tribulation), Allah Almighty will cause him to die tomorrow. Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: You have spoken the truth; this is how the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) narrated to us concerning the fitnah.
Al-Tabarani recorded this narration and the one before it; the narrators of this narration are the narrators of the Sahih, except Abu Thawr, and he is thiqah (trustworthy).
