Sayyiduna al-Bara' bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A Bedouin came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Teach me a deed that will admit me into Paradise. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You have used few words, but you have asked about a great matter. Free a soul and release a neck. He said: O Messenger of Allah! Are these two not one and the same? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No! Freeing a soul means that you alone free it, and releasing a neck means that you help in freeing it. And (there is) a gift that flows abundantly (or drips, meaning giving an animal for its milk), and giving to a relative who wrongs you. If you are not able to do that, then feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, enjoin what is good and forbid what is evil. And if you are not able to do even that, then restrain your tongue from everything except good!
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioning charity; he said: Part of charity is that a neck be freed and that it be released. A man said: Are these two not one and the same? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No! Freeing it means that you free it, and releasing it means that you help in freeing it. He said: And if I do not do this? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then a gift that flows abundantly (or drips, meaning giving an animal for its milk), and kindness to a relative.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Abd al-Malik bin Musa; al-Azdi says: He is munkar al-hadith (his narrations are rejected).

Sayyiduna Sahl bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever helps a person striving in the path of Allah, or helps a debtor in hardship, or helps a mukatab slave (one who has contracted to buy his freedom), Allah Almighty will grant him His shade on the Day when there will be no shade except His shade."
Ahmad recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Abdullah bin Sahl bin Hunayf, whom I do not know; the rest of its narrators are such that their hadith is hasan (good).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: A man accepted Islam. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) migrated, his family feared that he would follow the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so they tied him up. He wrote to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): You know of my Islam, so have me brought to you or get me released. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent six men on a camel and said: Perhaps you will find someone in a house who will help you concerning him. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) declared him free.
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
