وَعَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - قَالَ لَعَلِيٍّ : " نَاوِلْنِي كَفًّا مِنْ حَصًى " . فَنَاوَلَهُ ، فَرَمَى بِهِ وُجُوهَ الْقَوْمِ ، فَمَا بَقِيَ أَحَدٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ إِلَّا امْتَلَأَتْ عَيْنَاهُ مِنَ الْحَصْبَاءِ ، فَنَزَلَتْ : وَمَا رَمَيْتَ إِذْ رَمَيْتَ وَلَكِنَّ اللَّهَ رَمَى الْآيَةَ . رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ ، وَرِجَالُهُ رِجَالُ الصَّحِيحِ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "Hand me a handful of pebbles." He handed them to him, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) threw them towards the enemy. Not a single one of the enemy remained whose eyes were not filled with those pebbles (that is, affected by them). Concerning this, this verse was revealed: "When you threw the pebbles, it was not you who threw them, but Allah Almighty who threw them."
