Muhammad bin al-Hajjaj bin Husayn bin al-Sa'ib bin Abi Lubabah narrates from his father, from his grandfather: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say on the day of Badr: "When you face the enemy, how will you fight them?" Then Asim bin Thabit stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah, when the enemy is at a distance from us that arrows can reach, we will shoot arrows at them. When they come closer, so that they reach us and stones can reach them, we will try to crush them with stones." The man would take three stones, one stone in his hand and two stones in the fold of his waist-wrap. "When the enemy comes still closer to us, so that spears can reach him, then the fighting will be with spears; and when the spears are broken, the fighting will be with swords." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is the way of fighting that has been sent down. Whoever wants to fight, let him fight in the way Asim has described."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration. Concerning the narrator Muhammad bin al-Hajjaj, Abu Hatim said: He is majhul (unknown).
