Mukhariq narrates: On the day of the Battle of the Camel I met Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him), who was relieving himself to one side. I said: "Shall I fight alongside you?" He said: "Fight under the banner of your own people, for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) considered it preferable for a man to fight under the banner of his own people."
Imam Ahmad recorded this narration, and its chain is munqati' (broken). Imam Abu Ya'la, Imam al-Bazzar and Imam al-Tabarani also recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Ishaq bin Abi Ishaq al-Shaybani, from whom a group have narrated, and no one has declared him weak. The remaining narrators of one of Imam al-Tabarani's chains are thiqat (trustworthy).
