بَابُ رُبَّ قَتِيلٍ بَيْنَ الصَّفَّيْنِ اللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِنِيَّتِهِ
Many a man killed between the two ranks, Allah knows best his intention

عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ رِفَاعَةَ أَنَّ أَبَا مُحَمَّدٍ أَخْبَرَهُ وَكَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ حَدَّثَهُ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - قَالَ : " إِنَّ أَكْثَرَ شُهَدَاءِ أُمَّتِي لَأَصْحَابُ الْفُرُشِ ، رُبَّ قَتِيلٍ بَيْنَ الصَّفَّيْنِ اللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِنِيَّتِهِ " .
رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ هَكَذَا ، وَلَمْ أَرَهُ ذَكَرَ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ وَفِيهِ ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ وَحَدِيثُهُ حَسَنٌ وَفِيهِ ضَعْفٌ ، وَالظَّاهِرُ أَنَّهُ مُرْسَلٌ وَرِجَالُهُ ثِقَاتٌ .
رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ هَكَذَا ، وَلَمْ أَرَهُ ذَكَرَ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ وَفِيهِ ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ وَحَدِيثُهُ حَسَنٌ وَفِيهِ ضَعْفٌ ، وَالظَّاهِرُ أَنَّهُ مُرْسَلٌ وَرِجَالُهُ ثِقَاتٌ .
Ibrahim bin Ubayd bin Rifa'ah narrates that Abu Muhammad, who was one of the students of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), told him that he transmitted this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Most of the martyrs of my Ummah will be those who die on their beds, and as for a person killed between the two ranks, Allah knows best about his intention."
Ahmad recorded it in this way; I did not see him mention Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) in it. Its chain contains Ibn Lahi'ah, whose hadith is hasan (good) though there is weakness in him. It apparently seems that this report is mursal, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
