Qays bin Abi Hazim reports concerning Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) to some people of the tribe of Khath'am. They sought to protect themselves by prostrating, but Sayyiduna Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) killed them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) paid half the blood money (diyah) for them and then said: "I am free of responsibility for every Muslim who stays among the polytheists, (the two of them should live so far apart) that neither can see the other's fire."
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
