Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 8898

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by an idol made of copper. He struck its back with his blessed hand and then said: "May the one who worships you instead of Allah be disgraced and suffer loss." Then Sayyiduna Jibril came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and with him was an angel. That angel moved back. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What is the matter with him? Why has he moved back?" Sayyiduna Jibril said: "He sensed the smell of copper from you, and we (that is, the angels) cannot bear the smell of copper."
Imam Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains Yazid bin Yusuf al-San'ani, whom Yahya bin Ma'in and others declared da'if (weak), and he is matruk (abandoned). Abu Mus'hir praised him. Another narrator is Abu Sabrah; Imam Dhahabi says: "He is not known." The rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
