Hamzah bin Suhayb narrates: Sayyiduna Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) used the kunyah Abu Yahya, he used to say that he was of Arab descent, and he used to feed people a great deal. Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him, "O Suhayb! Why do you use the kunyah Abu Yahya when you have no child? And you say that you are of Arab descent, and you also feed people a great deal; this amounts to extravagance with wealth." Sayyiduna Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him the kunyah Abu Yahya. "As for what you said about lineage, I belong to al-Namir bin Qasit, who are from the people of Mosul, but I was taken captive as a small boy, though even then I had awareness of my family and my people. As for what you said about food, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Feed others and return the greeting of peace.' So it is this that motivates me to feed people." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Ibn Majah recorded a part of this narration.
Ahmad recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Aqil, whose narrated hadith is hasan (good), though there is some weakness in him. The rest of the narrators of this narration are thiqat (trustworthy).
