Majma al-Zawaid 7477 — The dowry (mahr)
وَعَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - قَالَ : " عَوِّضُوهُنَّ وَلَوْ بِسَوْطٍ " - يَعْنِي فِي التَّزْوِيجِ - .
رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ ، وَفِيهِ مَنْ لَمْ أَعْرِفْهُمْ .

Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Give them a compensation (that is, a dowry), even if it is a whip." The narrator says: That is, do this in marriage.
