Sayyiduna Kardam bin Sufyan al-Thaqafi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man said: "O Messenger of Allah!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned his attention to him. He asked: "Which army was the army of Ithran?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recognised that army. He related that Tariq bin al-Muraqqa' said to me on that occasion: "Who will give me his spear, so that he will be given its recompense as well?" I asked: "What will its recompense be?" He replied: "The first daughter born to me, I will marry her to that person." So I gave him that spear. Then for several years I was heedless of that man. Then the news reached me that a daughter had been born to him and that she had also reached maturity. I said to him: "Now send my wife to me." He said: "No! It cannot be without a dower." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Do you know what kind of woman she is?" I said: "She has seen poverty (or white hairs)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is better for you that you neither fall into sin yourself nor cause others to sin; leave that woman."
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains narrators who are mastur (of unknown condition), but there is no weakness in them.
