Imam al-Sha'bi narrated: Sayyiduna al-Miqdad bin al-Aswad (may Allah be pleased with him) borrowed seven thousand dirhams from Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). When he asked him for it, he said: "It was only four thousand." They took their dispute before Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I lent him seven thousand dirhams." Sayyiduna al-Miqdad (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Let him swear an oath that it was seven thousand." Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "You have been fair." But then he refused to swear the oath, so Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Take what he is giving you." He said: "By Allah, besides whom there is no god, it is seven thousand." He said: "Then what would have prevented you from swearing that this is night and this is day?"
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
