وَعَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - فَذَكَرَ حَدِيثًا ، وَقَالَ فِيهِ : " مَا ظَهَرَ فِي قَوْمٍ الزِّنَا ، وَالرِّبَا إِلَّا أَحَلُّوا بِأَنْفُسِهِمْ عِقَابَ اللَّهِ " .
رَوَاهُ أَبُو يَعْلَى ، وَإِسْنَادُهُ جَيِّدٌ .

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) mentions a hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in which these words occur: "Whenever fornication and usury (riba) appear among any people, they make the punishment of Allah Almighty lawful for themselves."
