Ikrimah narrates: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) passed through the Mosque at a time when the people of Syria were hurling stones at it (the Ka'bah) with a catapult from Mount Abu Qubays. Allah Almighty sent a thunderbolt upon them which burned their catapult, and forty-four men beneath it were also burned. Some people from Banu Umayyah said: "Do not be alarmed; thunderbolts strike here often." Then Allah Almighty sent another thunderbolt upon them; it burned their catapult and burned forty men beneath it. The narrator says: While they were in this state, news of the death of Yazid bin Mu'awiyah reached them, and the people of Syria scattered.
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: After this he mentioned the hadith which will come later in the Book of Tribulations (fitan), if Allah wills.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Hilal bin Khabbab, who is thiqah (trustworthy), though he has been criticised.
