Abd al-Majid al-Uqayli states: We set out to perform Hajj in the days when Yazid bin al-Muhallab rose in revolt. It had been mentioned to us that there is a water-spring in the upper region called al-Zajij. When we had completed the rites of Hajj, we came and reached al-Zajij, and there we made our mounts kneel. The narrator says: We went on until we came to a well beside which were some elders who had dyed their hair and were talking. We asked: "The man who is a Companion of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), where is his house?" They said: "Yes! The man who is a Companion of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), his house is that one," and they said this pointing towards a house. We went from there and came to that house. We gave the greeting of peace and he permitted us to enter. He was a very old, aged man, lying down, and his name was Sayyiduna al-Adda' bin Khalid al-Kilabi (may Allah be pleased with him). I asked: "Are you the one who has the honour of being a Companion of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He replied: "Yes! Were it not night-time, I would have had you read the letter that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent to me. Who are you people?" We replied: "We are from the people of Basrah." He said: "You are welcome. How is Yazid bin al-Muhallab?" We replied: "He is there, and he calls to the Book of Allah Almighty and the Sunnah of the Prophet." He said: "In this situation he is doing this?" We said: "Whom should we follow, these or those?" meaning the people of Syria or Yazid. He said: "If you stay seated, you will succeed and be rightly guided." The narrator says: To the best of my knowledge, he said this three times. (He then said:) "On the day of Arafah I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) standing in the two stirrups and saying in a loud voice: 'O people! What day is this day of yours?' The people said: 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said: 'What month is this month?' The people said: 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: 'What city is this city?' The people said: 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'This day of yours is a sacred day, and this month of yours is a sacred month.' The narrator says: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Behold! Your lives and your wealth are as inviolable to one another as the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month, in this city, and they will remain inviolable until you appear before your Lord, and He will hold you to account for your deeds.' The narrator says: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised both his hands towards the sky and said: 'O Allah, be witness over them.' He said this several times; I do not know how many times he said it." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Abu Dawud recorded this part of the report: "I saw him standing in the two stirrups."
Ahmad and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir recorded it, except that he (al-Tabarani) recorded these words: "a water called al-Raji'," and that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Is this not a sacred month, a sacred city and a sacred day?" The narrators of al-Tabarani have been declared trustworthy (muwaththaqun). (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: The remaining words of the sermon will come later, if Allah wills.
