Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 5332

It is reported about Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) that he noticed the scent of perfume at Dhu al-Hulayfah and said: "Where is this scent coming from?" Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Commander of the Believers, this scent is coming from me." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By my life, it is indeed coming from you." Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Sayyidah Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her) applied perfume to me, and she said that she had applied perfume to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at the time he entered ihram." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Go and urge her to wash it off." So Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) went back to Sayyidah Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her), and she washed it off.
Ahmad and al-Bazzar recorded it. He (al-Bazzar) transmitted these additional words: after Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered that it be washed off, he said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The pilgrim is dishevelled and without perfume." The narrators of Ahmad are the narrators of the Sahih, except that Sulayman bin Yasar did not hear from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). The chain of al-Bazzar is connected, except that it contains Ibrahim bin Yazid al-Khuzi, who is matruk (abandoned).
