Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in eight rak'ahs in the month of Ramadan and prayed the witr. When the next night came, we gathered in the mosque, hoping that he would come out to us, but he remained (in his house) until morning came. Then we went in to him and said: "O Messenger of Allah! We had gathered in the mosque, hoping that you would lead us in prayer." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I feared (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are:) I disliked that it should be made obligatory upon you."
Abu Ya'la and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Saghir recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Isa bin Jariyah, whom Ibn Hibban and others declared thiqah (trustworthy), while Yahya bin Ma'in declared him da'if (weak).
