Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 4645

Sayyiduna Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that he asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Which charity is most virtuous? He said: Begin your spending with those whom you support, and (the best is) the charity after which a person still remains well-off.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. As for Abu Salih, the freed slave of Hakim, I have not found anyone who has written his biography.
