Sayyiduna A'idh bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) reports this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Whoever has something of this provision come to him without asking and without greed should use it to make his means more ample. If he himself has no need of it, he should give it to someone who needs it more than he does."
Ahmad and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir recorded it, and he (al-Tabarani) has the words: "Whoever is offered something of this provision." Ahmad did not mention the word "shay'" (something). The narrators of Ahmad are the narrators of the Sahih. Abdullah bin Ahmad said: I asked my father: "What is meant by 'ishraf' (that is, greed)?" He said: "That you think to yourself: 'Soon so-and-so will send me something,' or 'Soon so-and-so will give me something.'"
