Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 4494

It is reported from him that he said: Nawfal bin al-Harith sent his two sons to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said to them: "Go to your cousin! Perhaps the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) will appoint you as officials to collect the zakah, and in this way you will earn something with which you can get married." They met Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), who asked: "What do you want?" They told him about their need, and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to them: "Go back!" So they went back. When evening came, Nawfal bin al-Harith instructed them to go to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When they came to the door, they asked permission to enter. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her): "Draw your curtain! My two cousins are about to come in." Then the two of them spoke with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about their matter, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O People of the House! Nothing of charity is permissible for you, which is the dirt of people's hands. For you there is a fifth of the khums (one-fifth of the spoils); it will make you free of need (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are:) it will suffice you."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains Husayn bin Qays, whose nickname is Hanash. He has been heavily criticised, and Abu Mihsan declared him thiqah (trustworthy).
