Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 4248

Sa'id bin Abdullah al-Awdi said: I was present with Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was in the throes of death. He said: "When I die, do with me as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us to do with our dead. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us, saying: 'When one of your brothers dies and you have levelled the earth over his grave, let one of you stand at the head of his grave and say: "O so-and-so, son of such-and-such a woman!" For he hears him but cannot answer. Then let him say: "O so-and-so, son of such-and-such a woman!" and the deceased will sit up straight. Then let him say: "O so-and-so, son of such-and-such a woman!" and the deceased will say: "Guide us, may Allah Almighty have mercy on you." (The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:) But you will not perceive it. Then the man should say: "Remember what you left the world upon: the testimony that there is no god but Allah Almighty and that Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and His Messenger, and that you were pleased with Allah Almighty as Lord, with Islam as religion, with Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) as Prophet and with the Qur'an as imam (that is, you believed in them)." (The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:) Then Munkar and Nakir each take the hand of his companion and say: "Let us go; we will not sit with someone who has been prompted with his argument." So Allah Almighty becomes the One who supplies his argument, rather than the two of them.' A man said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what if he does not know his mother's name?' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Then let him attribute him to Sayyidah Hawwa (may Allah be pleased with her) and say: "O so-and-so, son of Hawwa!"'"
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain contains a group of narrators whom I do not know.
