Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 4142

Abdullah bin Yasar says: Amr bin Hurayth came to visit Sayyiduna Imam Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) when he was ill. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "You have come to visit Hasan while there is in your heart what there is?" Amr said to him: "You are not my Lord, that you can turn my heart however you wish." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "That does not stop us from giving you sincere advice. I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'No Muslim visits his brother when he is ill except that Allah Almighty sends seventy thousand angels for him, who keep praying for mercy for him: if he went at any hour of the day, this continues until evening, and if he went at any hour of the night, this continues until morning.'" Amr bin Hurayth asked Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "What is your view about walking with a funeral: should one walk in front of it or behind it?" Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "Walking behind it has the same superiority over walking in front of it as offering the obligatory prayer in congregation has over offering the prayer alone." Amr bin Hurayth said: "But I have seen Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) walking in front of the funeral." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Both of them disliked putting people into difficulty." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Abu Dawud recorded only the part about visiting the sick from this narration, and he said that the visitor was Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him), whereas here it is reported that he was Amr bin Hurayth.
Ahmad recorded it, and al-Bazzar recorded it in abridged form. The narrators of Ahmad are thiqat (trustworthy). Further on, a report from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) will come that is clearer than this; it will come in the chapter on what should be said when placing the deceased in the grave.
