Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 3764

Abu Dawud narrates: I came to Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "O Abu Hamzah! The place is far, and we would like to come to visit you in your illness." He raised his head and said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever visits a sick person plunges into mercy, and when he is sitting with the sick person, mercy covers him." Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I said: "O Messenger of Allah! This reward is for the healthy person who visits the sick; so what reward will the sick person receive?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "His sins are removed from him."
Ahmad recorded it, and Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Saghir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and he recorded these additional words: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'When the sick person remains ill for three days, he comes out of his sins as he was on the day his mother gave birth to him.'" The narrator Abu Dawud is extremely weak (da'if jiddan), and in Tabarani's chain is Ibrahim bin al-Hakam bin Aban, who is also da'if (weak).
