Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Five or four of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would never leave the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (the narrator is in doubt; perhaps the words are:) the door of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). One night he came out and I followed him. He went into a garden, and there he prayed and made a long prostration. I thought: Perhaps Allah Almighty has taken the soul of His Messenger; now I will never see him again. Thinking this, I became grief-stricken and began to weep. He raised his head, called me and said: "What is the matter with you?" (The narrator is in doubt; perhaps the words are:) "What is it that I see in you?" I said: "O Messenger of Allah! You prolonged the prostration so much that I thought perhaps Allah Almighty had taken the soul of His Messenger and I would never see him again; at this I grieved and began to weep." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I made this prostration to thank my Lord, a thanks for what He has granted my Ummah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "My Lord said: 'Whoever among them sends blessings upon you once, ten good deeds will be recorded for him.'"
Al-Bazzar recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Musa bin Ubaydah, and he is da'if (weak). A hadith from him will come later in the chapter on the prostration of thanks.
