Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! Live as long as you wish, but (one day) you will die. Do whatever deeds you wish, you will be recompensed for them. Love whatever you wish, but you will have to part from it. And know that the honour of the believer lies in offering voluntary prayers at night, and his dignity lies in being independent of people."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains Zafir bin Sulayman, whom Ahmad, Yahya bin Ma'in and Abu Dawud declared thiqah (trustworthy). Ibn Adi and Ibn Hibban criticized him in a way that is not harmful.
