Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "'Qul huwa Allahu ahad' (Say: He is Allah, the One) is equal to one third of the Qur'an, and 'Qul ya ayyuha al-kafirun' (Say: O disbelievers) is equal to one quarter of the Qur'an." (The narrator said:) The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite these two surahs in the two rak'ahs (sunnah) of Fajr, and he would say: "In these two rak'ahs there is something to be desired for all time."
I say: Al-Tirmidhi recorded from this Companion the narration about reciting these two surahs in the two rak'ahs of Fajr.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and Abu Ya'la recorded something similar. He said: It is transmitted from Abu Muhammad, from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), whereas al-Tabarani said: It is transmitted from Mujahid, from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both). The narrators of Abu Ya'la are thiqat (trustworthy).
