Abd al-Malik bin Ka'b bin Ujrah narrates: On the day of Eid I went with Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Ujrah (may Allah be pleased with him) to the Eid prayer ground. He sat down before the imam came and did not offer (any voluntary prayer), until the imam and the people had performed the Eid prayer; then those people set off towards the mosque as if they were an 'unuq (perhaps meaning a vanguard). I said: "Have you noticed?" He said: "This is an innovation (bid'ah) and abandoning the Sunnah." In one narration the words are: "Much of what we see is excess and the result of little knowledge. On this day these two rak'ahs alone are the voluntary prayer, until this prayer calls you (that is, you should come only to perform this prayer)."
Al-Tabarani recorded both narrations in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; Ibn Hibban mentioned Abd al-Malik in the book al-Thiqat.
