Abu Salamah narrates: Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) was narrating hadiths to us from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said that in the day of Friday there is an hour in which, if a Muslim is praying and during it that Muslim asks Allah Almighty for any good, Allah Almighty grants him that thing. The narrator says: Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) indicated with his hand that this hour is brief. The narrator says: When Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away, I thought: By Allah, I will go to Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) and ask him about this hour; perhaps he has some knowledge about it. I came to him and saw that he was straightening palm stalks. I said: O Abu Sa'id, what are these stalks that I see you straightening? He said: These are stalks in which Allah Almighty has placed blessing for us. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) loved them and used to make use of them, so we keep them straightened and bring them to him. Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw phlegm on the qiblah side of the mosque. In his blessed hand was one such stalk (or stick), and he scraped it off with it and said: When a person is praying, he must never spit towards the front, because his Lord is in front of him; he should spit to his left or under his foot. The narrator says: Then the narrator named Surayj said: If he does not find a place to spit, he should spit into his garment or his sandal. The narrator says: Then it rained that very night. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out for the Isha prayer, lightning flashed, and he saw Sayyiduna Qatadah bin al-Nu'man. He asked: O Qatadah, what is the matter? He replied: O Messenger of Allah! I knew that tonight those attending the prayer would be few, so I liked to attend it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you have finished the prayer, stay in your place until I pass by you. When he finished the prayer, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him a stalk and said: Take this; it will give you light ten paces ahead of you and ten paces behind you. When you enter the house, you will see a dark shape in the corner of the house; strike it before you speak with anyone, for it will be a devil. Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said: He did so, and for this reason we love these sticks. The narrator says: I said: O Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id! Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated a hadith to us about the hour which is in the day of Friday; do you have any knowledge about it? He said: We asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about it, and he said: I was given knowledge of it, then I was made to forget it, just as I was made to forget the Night of Decree. (Al-Haythami says:) I say: The hadith reported from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) is mentioned in the Sahih, and the hadith reported from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) about scraping off the phlegm is also reported in the Sahih.
Ahmad recorded it, and al-Bazzar recorded a similar narration and added this: "Then I left him, the narrator says: that is, Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), until I came to the house of a man from among the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I thought: This man is a scholar of the Torah and also a Companion of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The narrator says: I went to him and said: Tell me about this hour about which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say what he said concerning the day of Friday. He said: Yes! Allah Almighty created Sayyiduna Adam (peace be upon him) on the day of Friday, settled him in Paradise on the day of Friday, sent him down to the earth on the day of Friday, and caused him to die on the day of Friday. It is the day on which the Hour will be established, and it (that hour) is the last hour of the day of Friday. The narrator says: I said: Do you not know that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: (A Muslim servant who supplicates) during prayer (has his supplication answered)? He said: Do you not know that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Whoever is waiting for a prayer is counted as being in prayer.'" The narrators of both these narrations are the narrators of the Sahih.
