وَعَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - : " لَعَلَّكُمْ تَقُرَءُونَ وَالْإِمَامُ يَقْرَأُ ؟ " قَالَهَا ثَلَاثًا ، قَالُوا : إِنَّا لَنَفْعَلُ ذَلِكَ قَالَ : " فَلَا تَفْعَلُوا إِلَّا أَنْ يَقْرَأَ أَحَدُكُمْ بِفَاتِحَةِ الْكِتَابِ فِي نَفْسِهِ " .
رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ وَرِجَالُهُ رِجَالُ الصَّحِيحِ .

One of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) relates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Perhaps you recite while the imam is reciting?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked this three times, and the people said: "We do that." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not do so, except that a person may recite Surah al-Fatihah to himself."
