Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 1865

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The adhan was first appointed so that it would be easy for those who pray to perform their prayer. When you hear the call of the adhan, perform ablution thoroughly, and when you hear the iqamah, hasten to join the first takbir, for it is part of the prayer and part of its completion. And do not try to get ahead of the imam in bowing or prostration."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain contains a narrator, Jabalah bin Sulayman, whom Yahya bin Ma'in declared da'if (weak).
