Sulayman bin Habib al-Muharibi says: I set out to take part in a military expedition. When I passed through Hims, I went to the market to buy the things a traveller cannot do without. When I looked at the door of the mosque, I thought: if I go inside the mosque and offer two rak'ahs (it would be fitting). When I entered the mosque, I saw Thabit bin Ma'bad and Makhul there with a group of people. They said: "We intend to go to Sayyiduna Abu Umamah al-Bahili (may Allah be pleased with him)." They got up, and I got up with them. We came into the presence of Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him); he was a frail, aged old man, but his intellect and his speech were more excellent than his outward appearance. The first thing he said to us was: "This gathering of yours is a conveying from Allah Almighty to you and Allah Almighty's proof against you. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) conveyed what he was sent with, and the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) conveyed what they heard, so you too convey whatever you hear! 'There are three people for whom Allah Almighty is the guarantor: a man who goes out in the path of Allah, for it is upon Allah Almighty that He admits him into Paradise or brings him back with reward and spoils; and a man who enters his house with greeting of peace.'" Then he said: "Over Hell there will be a bridge with seven levels; on the middle one will be the disobedient. A servant will be brought, and when he reaches the middle level he will be asked: 'How much debt do you owe?'" Then he recited this verse: "And they will not be able to conceal any statement from Allah." "That person will say: 'O my Lord! I owe such and such.' It will be said to him: 'Pay your debt!' He will say: 'I have nothing at all; I do not know what I could pay it with.' It will be said: 'Take his good deeds!' Good deeds will be taken from him until no good deed of his remains. When his good deeds are finished, it will be said: 'His good deeds are finished.' Then it will be said: 'Take the sins of the one demanding from him and place them on him!'" (The narrator says:) It has reached me
that some people will come with good deeds like mountains, and their good deeds will keep being taken for those demanding (recompense) from them, until no good deed of that person remains.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Kulthum bin Ziyad and Bakr bin Sahl al-Dimyati, both of whom have been declared trustworthy, though there is weakness in them; the rest of its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
