Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty says: Whoever shows enmity to a friend (wali) of Mine wages war against Me. I do not hesitate in doing anything as much as I hesitate concerning the death of the believer, because he dislikes death and I dislike what displeases him. Sometimes My believing friend asks Me for wealth, and I turn him away from wealth towards poverty; had I turned him towards wealth, it would have been bad for him. Likewise, sometimes a believing friend of Mine asks Me for poverty, and I turn him towards wealth; had I turned him towards poverty, it would have been bad for him. Allah Almighty says: By My might, My majesty, My lofty rank, My grandeur, My beauty and the loftiness of My station! Whenever My servant gives preference to what I love over his own desire, I keep his appointed term before his sight, the earth and the heavens become guarantors of his provision, and I am there for him beyond the trade of every trader."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration; its chain contains a group of narrators whom I do not know.
