Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 17448

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to teach us the Istikharah (whose words of supplication are these):
'Allahumma inni astakhiruka bi'ilmik, wa astaqdiruka biqudratik, wa as'aluka min fadlika wa rahmatik, fa'innahuma biyadika la yamlikuhuma siwak, fa'innaka ta'lamu wa la a'lam, wa taqdiru wa la aqdir, wa anta allam al-ghuyub, Allahumma in kana hadha al-amru alladhi turiduhu li khayran li fi dini wa fi dunyaya - ahsabuhu qala: wa aqibati amri fawaffiqhu wa sahhilh, wa in kana ghayru dhalika khayran fawaffiqni lil-khayr - ahsabuhu qala - haythu kan'
(O Allah! I seek good from You by Your knowledge, I seek ability from You by Your power, and I ask You for Your bounty and Your mercy, for both are in Your hand and no one besides You owns them. Indeed You know and I do not know, You have power and I have no power, and You are the Knower of the unseen. O Allah! If this matter which You intend for me is better for me in my religion and my worldly life (the narrator is unsure; perhaps these words are also included:) and better in terms of my outcome, then grant success in it and make it easy; and if the good lies in something else, then grant me success towards the good (the narrator is unsure; perhaps these words are also included:) wherever it may be.)
Al-Bazzar recorded it with various chains, and al-Tabarani recorded it in all three of his books; most of al-Bazzar's chains are hasan (fair).
