Sayyiduna Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) transmits this statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Whatever supplication any Muslim on the face of the earth makes to Allah Almighty, Allah Almighty either grants him that thing or holds back from him an evil equal to it, so long as he has not supplicated for a sin or for severing family ties, and so long as he is not hasty." The people asked: "What is meant by his being hasty?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He says: 'I supplicated and I supplicated, but it was not answered at all.'" A man among those present said: "O Messenger of Allah, then we should do so (i.e. supplicate) abundantly." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty is more abundant (in grace and generosity)." (Allamah Haythami says:) I say:
Tirmidhi has recorded this report in abridged form, regarding the part about haste in supplication.
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Maslamah bin Ali, who is da'if (weak).
