Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 17112

Sayyiduna Jubayr bin Mut'im (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "O Jubayr, would you like it that when you set out on a journey, you are the finest of your companions in appearance and the most plentiful of them in provisions?" I said: Yes! May my mother and father be sacrificed for you. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then recite these five surahs: Surah al-Kafirun, Surah al-Nasr, Surah al-Ikhlas, Surah al-Falaq and Surah al-Nas, and recite 'Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim' before each of them, and end your recitation with 'Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim'." Sayyiduna Jubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I was well-off and had much wealth. Previously, when I set out on a journey with those whom Allah willed that I travel with, I would be the shabbiest of them in appearance and the most meagre of them in provisions. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught me these surahs and I began reciting them, my state became such that I would be the finest of them in outward appearance and the most plentiful of them in provisions, until I returned from that journey (that is, this remained the case throughout the whole journey).
Abu Ya'la recorded it, and its chain contains narrators whom I do not know.
