In a narration also reported from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), the words are: "A man from the Ansar said to his companions: 'By Allah! I used to tell you that when matters became settled, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would give others preference over you.' The narrator says: They rebuked him harshly. The narrator narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was informed of this, he came to them and said various things to them which I do not remember, and the people said: 'Yes indeed, O Messenger of Allah!' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'And did you not use to ride horses before?' Whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said anything to them, they would say only: 'Yes indeed, O Messenger of Allah!' When he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw that they were not giving him any reply—" (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: After this the narrator mentioned the narration as before, in which the words are: "The Ansar are my confidants (or my very closest ones), they are my household, and they are my place of refuge in which I took shelter; so overlook those of them who do wrong and accept the good from them." Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I said to Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him): "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told us that we would soon see others being given preference over us." Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "Then what did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instruct you to do?" I said: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed us to be patient." Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Then be patient."
