Abu Bakr bin Muhammad bin Amr bin Hazm narrates: Sayyiduna Rabi'ah bin Rawa' al-Ansi (may Allah be pleased with him) came into the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and found that he was eating his evening meal. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) invited him to the meal, and he ate. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "Do you bear witness that there is no god but Allah Almighty, and that Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and His Messenger?" Sayyiduna Rabi'ah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah Almighty, and that Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and His Messenger." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Are you doing this out of your own desire, or are you doing this out of fear?" Sayyiduna Rabi'ah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "As for desire, by Allah, it is not in your hand. And as for fear, by Allah, we live in such a region that your armies have not reached there, nor have your horsemen. But I was made to fear, so I feared; and I was told: 'Believe,' so I believed." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The people of the Ans tribe are excellent orators." Then he began to come and go to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) bade him farewell. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you sense something wrong in your health, then go to the nearest settlement." The narrator says: He set off from there; on the way he sensed his health deteriorating, so he went to the nearest settlement, and he passed away there.
Al-Tabarani recorded it as a mursal narration; its chain contains Muhammad bin Isma'il bin Ayyash, and he is da'if (weak), and he did not hear from his father.
