Sayyiduna Abu Tha'labah al-Khushani (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I submitted: "O Messenger of Allah! Tell me which thing is lawful for me and which thing is unlawful?" The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) looked me over carefully from head to foot and then said: "A little one (nuwaybitah)." I submitted: "O Messenger of Allah! A little one of goodness, or of evil?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rather, a little one of goodness." I submitted; after this the narrator mentioned the complete hadith.
Ahmad, and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, recorded it with various chains. The narrators of one of Ahmad's chains are the narrators of the Sahih, except for Muslim bin Mishkam, and he is thiqah (trustworthy).
