Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 16066

Isma'il bin Ayyub bin Salamah bin Abdullah bin al-Walid bin al-Mughirah bin Abdullah bin Umar bin Makhzum narrates: Sayyiduna al-Walid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) was confined in Makkah. When he intended to emigrate, he sold his land, whose name was al-Mana bi-Naqah; it was in Ta'if. He composed these verses:
"If I emigrate and sell Banaqah, and then buy jewellery and a she-camel in exchange for it, then shoot arrows at them along with your longing soul."
Then he found the people heedless, so he set out. With him were Sayyiduna Ayyash bin Abi Rabi'ah bin al-Mughirah (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Salamah bin Hisham bin al-Mughirah (may Allah be pleased with him). These people set out on foot, fearing that people might come after them. Then they began running until they became tired. Al-Walid fell behind, and he began reciting these verses:
"O my two feet, join me to the people; after today you will not promise me sluggishness."
When he was near al-Ajras, he stumbled and fell, and he said:
"You are nothing but a finger that has bled, and in the path of Allah you have met what you met."
When he came into the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in Madinah, he submitted: "O Messenger of Allah! If I die, shroud me in your shirt, and let that shirt be placed against my body." Then he passed away, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) shrouded him in his own shirt. Once he went to the home of Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), and a child was in front of her, and she was reciting this poetry:
"Weep for al-Walid bin al-Walid, who is Abu al-Walid bin al-Mughirah. Indeed al-Walid bin al-Walid, Abu al-Walid, sufficed for the family. In the years of drought he was a rain cloud; he was a stream abundant in water, and he was provision."
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You people have almost made al-Walid an object of tenderness." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave that child the name Abdullah.
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Abd al-Aziz bin Imran, and he is matruk (abandoned).
