Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 16041

Sayyiduna Umayr bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) sent Sayyiduna Umayr bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) as governor of Hims. He stayed there for a year, during which he did not come to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to his scribe: Write to Sayyiduna Umayr bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him). By Allah, I think he has betrayed us. Write to him: When this letter of mine reaches you, come, and as soon as you read this letter of mine, bring with you whatever you have collected of the fay' (public revenue) of the Muslims. Sayyiduna Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him) took his bag, put his provisions and his bowl in it, hung up his water-skin, took his short spear, and set out on foot from Hims until he reached Madinah. The narrator says: When he arrived in Madinah his complexion had changed, his face was covered with dust and his hair had grown long. He came to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: O Commander of the Believers, peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: What is your condition? Sayyiduna Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: How does my condition seem to you? Do you not see that my body is healthy and my blood is pure, and that I have the world with me, which I have dragged here by its horns? Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: What do you have with you? Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) thought that he had perhaps brought wealth. He said: I have this bag of mine, in which I keep my provisions; and my bowl, in which I eat and with which I also wash my head and my clothes; and my water vessel, in which I carry water for ablution and for drinking; and my short spear, on which I lean and with which I fight my enemy if he confronts me. By Allah, the world is nothing but a follower of these belongings of mine. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Did you come on foot? He replied: Yes. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Was there no one who would have given you a mount as a gift, so that you could ride it? He said: They did not do so, and I did not ask them for it either. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Wretched are the Muslims from whom you have come! Sayyiduna Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Umar, fear Allah! Allah Almighty has forbidden you from backbiting, and I saw them offering the dawn prayer. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: What about the task for which I sent you; what did you do? Sayyiduna Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: O Commander of the Believers, what is it you wish to ask about? Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Subhan Allah! Sayyiduna Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah, had I not feared that I would grieve you, I would not have told you. You sent me, and I came to the city. I gathered the righteous people of the city and appointed them to collect their fay', and when they had collected it, I spent it in its proper places. Had any of it been due to you, I would have brought it to you. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: So you have brought us nothing? He replied: No. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Issue a fresh appointment for Umayr. Sayyiduna Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: That would be a bad thing; I will not work for you, nor for anyone after you. By Allah, I did not remain safe; rather, I was not even kept safe from saying to a Christian: May Allah disgrace you. O Umar, this is what you exposed me to. And, O Umar, the most wretched of my days was the day I stayed behind (in office) with you. Then he asked Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) for permission, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) gave him permission, and he returned to his home. The narrator says: Between his home and Madinah there was a distance of some miles. When Sayyiduna Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him) had left, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I think he has betrayed us. Then he sent a man named al-Harith and said: Go and stay with him as though you were a guest. If you see any sign (indicating betrayal), come back; and if you see a hard situation (that is, poverty in his home), give him these one hundred dinars. That man, al-Harith, went, and found Sayyiduna Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him) sitting beside the wall, picking the lice from his shirt. The man greeted him, and Sayyiduna Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: May Allah have mercy on you; stay here. The man stayed there. Then Sayyiduna Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him: Where have you come from? He replied: From Madinah. Sayyiduna Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: In what state did you leave the Commander of the Believers? He said: He is well. Sayyiduna Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: In what state did you leave the Muslims? He said: They are well too. Sayyiduna Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Do they not establish the prescribed punishments (hudud)? The man said: Yes indeed (they do). He punished a son of his who had committed an immoral act, and the boy died as a result of that punishment. Sayyiduna Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Allah, help Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), for as far as I know he is so stern because of his intense love for You. The narrator says: That man stayed with them for three days. They had nothing but a single loaf of barley bread, which they gave especially to him while they themselves went hungry, until hardship overcame them. Sayyiduna Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him) said to the man: O you, you have made us go hungry; if you see fit, then leave us. The narrator says: The man took out the dinars, handed them to him and said: The Commander of the Believers has sent these to you; seek help with them. He cried out and said: I have no need of them; take them back. His wife said to him: If you need them, keep them; otherwise spend them in their proper places. Sayyiduna Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah, I have nothing in which to put them. So his wife tore off the lower part of her garment and gave him that piece of cloth. He put the dinars in it, then went out and distributed the dinars among the children of the martyrs and the poor. Then he came back, while the messenger was thinking that perhaps he would give him some of them too. He said to the messenger: Convey my greetings of peace to the Commander of the Believers. When the man al-Harith returned to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: What did you see? He said: O Commander of the Believers, I saw a hard situation. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: What did he do with the dinars? The messenger said: I do not know. The narrator says: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to him: When my letter reaches you, do not put it down from your hand before you have set out towards me. So he came to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and presented himself before Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: What did you do with the dinars? He said: Whatever I did with them, why are you asking about them? Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I ask you by Allah to tell me what you did with them. Sayyiduna Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: I have sent them ahead for myself. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: May Allah Almighty have mercy on you. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered that he be given a wasq of grain and two garments. Sayyiduna Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: As for the grain, I have no need of it, for I left two sa' of barley at home, which will serve me until Allah Almighty grants further provision. So he did not take the grain. Then he said: As for the two garments, such-and-such a woman is in need of clothing. He took the two garments and returned with them to his home. Then he remained at his home until he passed away, may Allah Almighty have mercy on him. When the news reached Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), it weighed heavily upon him, and he prayed for mercy for Sayyiduna Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him). He went out on foot, accompanied by others on foot, until he came to Baqi' al-Gharqad, and he said to his companions: Let each one of you state his wish. One man said: O Commander of the Believers, I wish I had wealth so that with it I could free such-and-such a number of people for the sake of Allah. Another man said: I wish I had wealth so that with it I could free such-and-such a number of people for the sake of Allah. Another man said: I wish I had wealth so that I could spend it in the way of Allah. Another man said: I wish I had strength so that with it I could draw Zamzam water with a bucket and give it to the pilgrims of the House of Allah. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I wish I had a man like Umayr; I wish I had several men like Umayr, whose help I could seek in the affairs of the Muslims.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains Abd al-Malik bin Harun bin Antarah, who is matruk (abandoned).
