It is reported about Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he used to say: "Tell me about a man who will enter Paradise and who never offered a single prayer." When the people did not recognise that man, they asked Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): "Who is that man?" Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) told them: "Usayrim," who belonged to Banu Abd al-Ashhal; his name was Amr bin Thabit bin Waqsh. The narrator Husayn says: I asked Sayyiduna Mahmud bin Labid (may Allah be pleased with him): "What was the story of Usayrim?" He told me: From among his people, this man had not accepted Islam. When the occasion of the Battle of Uhud came and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out towards Uhud, it occurred to this man that he should accept Islam, so he became a Muslim. He took his sword, advanced towards the enemy, entered among the enemy and kept fighting until he was wounded. After the fighting, the men of Banu Abd al-Ashhal were searching the battlefield for their slain, and that man was also there. The people said: "By Allah! This is the body of Usayrim. How did he come here? We had left him behind, and this man used to reject this matter (that is, Islam)." Then those people asked him how he had come there. They asked: "O Amr! Why did you come here? Did some incident occur among your people? Or did you come out of desire for Islam?" He said: "Rather, I have come out of desire for Islam. I have believed in Allah and His Messenger and I have accepted Islam. Then I took my sword, set out with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and kept fighting until I came to this state." The narrator says: A short while later, that man passed away in their hands. The people mentioned him before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He is among the people of Paradise."
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
