Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 15176

Muhammad bin al-Hasan al-Makhzumi says: When the family of Imam Husayn bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) was brought before Yazid bin Mu'awiyah, and his head was placed in front of him, Yazid wept and recited this verse: "We have our heads cut off on account of some people who are dear to us, though they were the more disobedient and the more unjust." Then he said: By Allah! Had I been in your presence, I would never have killed you. Imam Zayn al-Abidin (may Allah be pleased with him) said: It is not like that. Yazid said: How so? Imam Zayn al-Abidin (may Allah be pleased with him) recited this verse: "No calamity befalls on the earth or in yourselves except that it is in a Record before We bring it into being; indeed, that (recording everything beforehand) is easy for Allah Almighty." At that time Abd al-Rahman bin Umm al-Hakam was present there, and Abd al-Rahman bin Umm al-Hakam recited these verses: "The heads at al-Taff were of closer kinship than Ibn Ziyad, the slave whose very lineage is doubtful. The offspring of Sumayyah have become as countless as pebbles, while the lineage (that is,) the offspring of the daughter of the Messenger of Allah has not survived." Yazid raised his hand, struck Abd al-Rahman on the chest and said: Be quiet.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration. The narrator Muhammad bin al-Hasan is Muhammad bin al-Hasan bin Zubalah, and he is da'if (weak).
