Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Two men from Najran, al-Aqib and al-Sayyid, came. The narrator says: They intended to engage in mutual imprecation (mubahalah) with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The narrator says: One of them said to his companion: "Do not engage in mubahalah at all, for by Allah, if he is a prophet and we engage in mubahalah with him, then neither we nor our descendants will ever succeed." The narrator says: The two of them came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "We will not engage in mubahalah with you; rather, we will pay you what you ask. Send a trustworthy man with us." The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I will send a man who is truly trustworthy, truly trustworthy." The narrator says: The Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) became fully attentive. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah, stand up." When he stood up, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is the trustee of this Ummah." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Imam Ibn Majah recorded part of this narration.
Imam Ahmad recorded this narration and Imam al-Bazzar recorded it. The narrators of Imam al-Bazzar are the narrators of the Sahih, and likewise the narrators of Imam Ahmad, except Khalaf bin al-Walid, and he is thiqah (trustworthy).
