Ibn Shawdhab narrates: On the day of Badr, the father of Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) kept confronting him, but Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) kept avoiding him. When his father confronted him persistently, Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) killed him. Then Allah Almighty revealed this verse about it: "You will not find a people who believe in Allah and the Last Day having affection for those who oppose Allah and His Messenger, even if they were their fathers, their sons, their brothers or their kindred. Those are the ones in whose hearts Allah has inscribed faith and whom He has supported with a spirit from Himself. And He will admit them to gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding therein forever. Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him. Those are the party of Allah. Unquestionably, it is the party of Allah who are the successful."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration; its chain is munqati' (broken), and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
