وَعَنْ صِلَةَ بْنِ زُفَرَ قَالَ : كَانَ عَلِيٌّ إِذَا ذُكِرَ عِنْدَهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ قَالَ : السَّبَّاقُ ، يَذْكُرُونَ السَّبَّاقَ قَالَ : وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ مَا اسْتَبَقْنَا إِلَى خَيْرٍ قَطُّ إِلَّا سَبَقَنَا إِلَيْهِ أَبُو بَكْرٍ . .
رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْأَوْسَطِ ، وَفِيهِ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْمُفَضَّلِ الْحَرَّانِيُّ وَلَمْ أَعْرِفْهُ ، وَبَقِيَّةُ رِجَالِهِ ثِقَاتٌ .

Silah bin Zufar narrates: Whenever Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was mentioned in the presence of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), he would say: "The one who races ahead! They are mentioning the one who races ahead." Then he said: "By the One in Whose hand is my soul, whenever we raced towards any good, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) had already outstripped us to it."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, Ahmad bin Abd al-Rahman bin al-Mufaddal al-Harrani, whom I do not know. The remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).
