Harb bin Surayj narrates: A man from Bal'adawiyyah told me; he said: My grandfather told me: I went to Madinah al-Munawwarah and halted in a valley there. There were two men there with a single goat between them, and the buyer was saying to the seller: Deal fairly with me in this sale. I thought to myself: Is this the young Hashimi who has led people astray? Is it him? The narrator says: When I looked closely, he was a man with a handsome body, a broad forehead, a fine nose and fine eyebrows; from his chest to his navel there was something like a thin line of black hair, and he was wrapped in two sheets. The narrator says: He came near us and said: Al-salamu alaykum (peace be upon you). We returned his greeting. After a little while the buyer called out and said: O Messenger of Allah! Tell him to deal fairly with me in this sale. He stretched out his hand, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They are your properties; you are their owners. I hope that when I appear before Allah Almighty on the Day of Resurrection, not one of you will make a claim against me for anything in which I wronged anyone in respect of his wealth, his life or his honour. May Allah Almighty have mercy on the person who is lenient when selling, lenient when buying, lenient when taking, lenient when giving, lenient when paying back, and lenient when demanding repayment. Then he went on his way. I thought: By Allah! I will follow him, for what he says is good. I went after him and said: O Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! He turned to me fully and said: What do you want? I said: Are you the one who has led people astray, brought them to ruin, and kept them away from what their forefathers used to worship? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: That (One worthy of worship) is Allah Almighty. I said: To what do you call? He said: I call the servants of Allah to Allah Almighty. I said: What do you say? He said: I bear witness that there is no god besides Allah Almighty, and that I am the Messenger of Allah; and that you believe in what has been revealed to me, reject al-Lat and al-Uzza, establish prayer and give zakah. The narrator says: I asked: What is zakah? He said: It is that our well-off people give to our poor. I said: This is a fine thing to which you call. Then the narrator said: Before this, the situation was that there was no one on the face of the earth more hateful to me than him, but then it came to be that he became dearer to me than my children, my father and all people. The narrator says: I said: I have come to know (the truth). He said: You have come to know? I said: Yes! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then bear witness that there is no god besides Allah Almighty, and that I, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), am the Messenger of Allah, and believe in what has been revealed to me. The narrator says: I said: Very well, O Messenger of Allah! I will go to a watering place where many people come, and I will call those people to that to which you call; I hope that they will follow you. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Very well, call them. The narrator says: So the people living around that watering place, their men and their women, accepted Islam. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had also passed his hand over that man's head.
