Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: It was asked: "O Messenger of Allah, who is the chief (sayyid)?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sayyiduna Yusuf, son of Sayyiduna Ya'qub, son of Sayyiduna Ishaq, son of Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon them)." The people asked: "Is there then no chief in your Ummah?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, there is! A man who has been given lawful wealth and granted generosity, who keeps the poor close, and against whom people have few complaints."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains Nafi' Abu Hurmuz, who is matruk (abandoned).
